The Mermaid Parade
The Coney Island Mermaid Parade takes place every June on Coney Island, a summer event celebrating the coming the escape from the hot city to the beach. Sometimes referred to as New York’s Mardi Gras, the bawdiness and flamboyance of the New Orleans cousin takes on a fun maritime theme, with costumes and floats that are enjoyed in New York by the whole family. Mermaids and sea creatures of every shape and size are represented, and the audience is festive and appreciative.
Each year the Mermaid Parade features a merman and mermaid King and Queen. One particular bit of Sharkiness is that the parade encourages prize winning bribery, giving certain floats and entertainers an odds upending chance to win top prizes in the costume contests, which are a delightful spectacle of beauty, color and splendor.
Each year a Merman and Mermaid King and Queen are selected from famous celebrates who participate in the fun and frolicking.
Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest
In a totally New York summer event that has spread across the U.S., an estimated 40,000 fans makes their pilgrimage to the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island to watch the Nathan's Famous July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest in person. They’re joined by a live ESPN telecast of the event of almost 2 million viewers in this crazy summer spectacle. The Coney Island event culminates several qualifying events throughout the country at Nathan’s Famous Frankfurter Restaurants, telecast right after the Wimbledon tennis match. In the recent absence of hot dog eating sensation Takeru Kobayashi, Joey Chestnut, is the current defending national champion, winning his latest title by consuming 62 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes.
New York Chocolate Show
The New York Chocolate Show is one of the largest shows dedicated to chocolate and only to chocolate in the entire world, every November the show brings together more than sixty chocolate companies who present a beautiful and varied array of fine chocolates and chocolate-inspired products that make chocolate history every year.
The event typically features book signings, cooking demonstrations and a fun and favorite show held in the Kids Zone for young chocolate enthusiasts.
The Show also includes several hands-on learning exhibits where you can learn how chocolate is made and transformed into everything from pastries to clothing to syrups and cookies and even wine.
