New York Hotels

The majority of New York hotels are to be found in Manhattan. This is the busiest, wealthiest and most populated of the city’s five boroughs and of the 258 registered hotels, it’s home to 223 of them.

Experienced travelers will know that choosing the right hotel means considering quite a few factors. A family trip may require a different type of hotel to a romantic getaway or a business trip. Fortunately, New York has something for everyone.

Boutique Hotels In New York

New York is seen as a world center of boutique hotels. Most of the these can be found in and around Manhattan, especially in the Midtown area. The Royalton Hotel is considered among the city’s first boutique hotels. It belongs to the Morgans Hotel Group, which was named for its very first boutique hotel, the Morgans Hotel. The Morgans Hotel was opened in 1984 and was the brainchild of Ian Schrager. It was an exciting venture and is still a great place to stay. The interior was designed by Andrée Putnam, an eccentric designer who was to New Yorkers the measure of contemporary French taste and style.

Ian Schrager was also behind the The Royalton Hotel. Although the building dates from the late 19th century, the hotel interior was designed by Philippe Starck, who’s renowned for his modernist use of colors and lines. It’s a four-star hotel and because it’s in Midtown West you’ll be close to many famous landmarks, including the Empire State Building and Times Square.

In Manhattan you’ll find many boutique hotels and they vary quite a lot from one another. You’ll have the dark wood and cream linen contrast of The Royalton and you’ll have the technologically and pop art savvy of The Pod Hotel.

Head to Lower Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood for the Greenwich Hotel. It’s an 88-room hotel which is known for its attention to luxurious detail. At the poolside you’ll find a feature you’re not likely to find anywhere else. A 250 year old Japanese farmhouse was specially flown over so that guests could relax in the structure after a dip in the pool.

Luxury Hotels In New York

The city is know as much for its boutique hotels as for its hotels which offer classic four and five-star luxury. There are those which have been around for many years, like the Waldorf-Astoria, and others which are relatively new, like the Hilton Hotel. The Hilton isn’t all that new, it opened 1963, but compared to the Waldorf-Astoria, which has a history dating back to 1893, it’s quite new. The Hilton is New York’s biggest hotel and rises to a height of 47 storys. It has a long list of famous guests and has been featured in many popular movies and television shows.

The Four Seasons is another New York landmark hotel, as is the Plaza Hotel. The Plaza Hotel is located with views over Central Park and is known for its elegant design and meticulous service. It’s also been going for over a hundred years and has the full five stars to its credit. It’s a popular hotel not only for those looking for timeless elegance, but for its location in Central Park South. If you know New York, you'll know that this makes it just a short trip to the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts and Rockefeller Center. Radio City Music Hall is also nearby, and, if you’re with the kids, the Central Park Zoo is just across the road.

Economy Hotels In New York

Although there is a YMCA in Brooklyn, this is not really a city with many hostels or B&Bs. There are a few B&Bs, but most looking for budget hotels will find good deals elsewhere. Hotel Pennsylvania is located in Midtown Manhattan and has 1705 rooms. It's a good choice for those who want to be near the Broadway Theater district and spare their cash for tickets and dinners. It’s also close to Madison Square Garden.
