Dining in New York
New York City is not defined as having one type of food like some other parts of the country or world, but instead is known to have many different selections and types to choose from. With various ethnic groups, New York City has neighborhoods that specialize in all different kinds of food from all over the world.
Classic New York Food
A local food that is eaten all over the country but very popular in New York are Hot Dogs. The hot dog is considered to be one of the oldest processed foods and came to the United States from European butcher shops in the 1800's. They started in New York on Coney Island. They were sold on pushcarts by the locals and that led to Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest held annually.
Another of the popular foods in New York is pizza. Eating Pizza in New York is a popular thing to do. The first pizzeria in the United States was found in New York City in 1905. New York is known to have pizza with thin crust with an even layer of sauce and triangular slices. It came to New York as early as 1900 with Italian immigrants. A pizza parlor can be found about every 5 blocks in the city.
Bagels are another type of popular New York food. They began in Europe, but were made into what they are today around the beginning of the 19th century in New York. They are both baked and boiled, for added flavor. A 'bagel and a schmear' is a popular order in New York. It is a bagel with a thick piece of cream cheese.
New York Delis are another staple of the New York community. They serve up local foods including hot corned beef on rye, matzo ball soup, chopped liver, as well as deli sandwiches. No matter where these sandwiches are purchased, they will not be cheap. Expect to spend about $15 or more for a pastrami on rye or something of the like. Deli sandwiches can also be found on street corners and throughout the city on New York Food Trucks that are scattered around.
Types of Cuisine in New York
The types of cuisine in New York City vary depending on the neighborhood. With each neighborhood essentially a separate city, there is plenty to choose from in all areas of New York City.
Located in the Bronx, Little Italy specializes in Italian food, including pizza, pasta, and some fresh gelato for a real taste of Italy. The neighborhood of the Bronx also has pastry shops that have been around for a long time and various pizza shops all over. There are also fruit stands and butcher shops.
In Manhattan, there are different types of food, including that found in Chinatown. This area has a great variety of food from Southeast Asia, including Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, Szechuan, and Shanghai. Also located in Manhattan is the Soho and East Village Neighborhood. This area specializes in meat, poultry, seafood, and many different vegetarian fillings. There are also desserts here as well. The Lower East Side and Financial District of Manhattan serves up Jewish food, including knish. When dining in Manhattan, there is plenty of variety to choose from.
Queens is a borough in New York that is a great place to go to get food at a reasonable price. There is variety here from places all over the world. Among some of the local food is Greek souvlaki, Italian ices, Indian dal, and Jamaican beef. Queens is also home to many outdoor markets that can be found along many of the streets.
