Hunting for the Best Sandwich in New York
Curious about a sandwich that’s good enough to be dubbed the best in the Big Apple? One New Yorker embarked on a quest to find the best sandwich in New York.
Ever wondered which sandwich has just the right flavors, just the right crunch? Well I have. I've eaten countless amazing sandwiches in countless ambiances in the city, but I yearned for something different, something better. I wanted the best. So with high hopes and an empty belly, I set out to find it.
My journey began with me confessing this need to my dear friend Carlos, a native of Mexico, over coffee. He started me of right by telling me that I would be crazy if I didn't begin at the traditional Mexican spot tucked away in Brooklyn, La Superior. With his suggestion, I ordered the torta ahogada. Could this be the best sandwich in New York? I could hardly wait to find out as the smells of spices and freshly crafted food filled my eager nose. The torta ahogada was one of the most beautiful sandwiches I had ever seen. It sat on a small round white porcelain plate. It was a carnitas creation covered in a sauce so perfect I practically wanted to lick the plate when I had finished. The only con? To eat it right, you had to use a fork and knife, and I don't know about you, but to me there is nothing quite like eating a great sandwich with your hands.
I headed back toward the city and wondered where I should look for something to best the incredible Mexican treat I just engulfed. Two arguing men interrupted my thoughts. They were seated on a bench not far from the road. I couldn't help but overhear their heated debate about where to find the best lobster roll. The second I heard one of them blurt out a name, I knew where I was headed next. Red Hook Lobster Pound is a very popular place, and I couldn't believe I'd never heard about it.
After hearing the description of the Connecticut Lobster Roll, I couldn't wait any longer. In no time at all, a masterpiece lay before me. A bun toasted with butter, (no mayo to interfere with the flavor here) cradled big moist chunks of butter soaked lobster. It was topped with thin slices of green scallion and a dash of paprika. This melt in your mouth shellfish definitely had a chance at winning my esteemed award of the best sandwich in new york. It was perfect in its simplicity and yet I couldn't help myself wanting more. This sandwich got straight to the point with its flavors, but to be called the best sandwich in New York, I needed something with a little surprise.
The bumpy ride of the taxi left me with some time to brainstorm. All I could think of were places that I had already been. Until I had a brilliant idea. I leaned over the front seat of the cab and looked at the nameplate of my taxi driver, Guistino. I quickly asked him, what he thought the best sandwich in New York was? In a thick Italian accent and zero hesitation, he replied with only five words, "meatball sandwich at Terroir Tribeca." That utterance was enough. I had him drop me off out front.
This sandwich was no doubt a work of art, and yet it was approachable. I reached for a fork and knife (it's a semi-fancy place) when my waiter interrupted me, "go ahead, use your hands." I smiled and picked up the light crispy bread and crunched down. My mouth was hit with a flavor explosion. The veal-ricotta blend meatball perfectly marinated and covered in a bright gourmet marinara. A smile stretched across my face and I knew my mission was accomplished. I had finally found the best sandwich in New York.
Though all the sandwiches I experienced are worth trying, if you're in the city and in a time crunch, I suggest you situate yourself near the best sandwich in New York. The Tribeca Grand Hotel is a great place to stay with wonderful accommodations. Not only will you be within walking distance of the incredible flavors of Terroir Tribeca, if you're there in the Spring, you can catch the world famous Tribeca Film Festival. Happy Hunting!
