Game five of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals was certainly a memorable one. After a hard fought battle, the Capitals had the lead at 2-1 in the third period, and time was dwindling down. With only 22 seconds left Joel Ward was caught with his stick above the shoulders, and got sent to the box with a double minor. There was an immediate change in momentum as the Rangers realized they had one last chance.
Both Capitals and Rangers fans were stunned by the outcome of Monday night’s game when it looked like Alex Ovechkin, and the rest of the Caps were going to head home up 3-2 in the series. The late penalty by Ward sparked the belief in the Rangers that they still had an opportunity to at least tie up the game, and hash it out in overtime. Not only did they have a power play, the double minor gave them two in a row.
Richards immediately used the man advantage to squeeze the puck under Holtby’s glove and tie the game up with only seven seconds remaining in regulation. With one of the power plays exhausted, the Rangers quickly went to work on the next one. Staal wound up, and shot a laser from the point only 25 seconds into overtime. As soon as the lamp lit up, the 18,200 fans in Madison Square Garden jumped to their feet in celebration.
Now the series heads to game six in Washington, where the teams have each taken one game so far this series. It is sure to be another test of strength and willpower as the fans will surely have the backs of their home town Caps.
